Wang Bing talks about his observational method in real time
The Chinese director, Wang Bing, is one of the pivotal figures of world documentary film. His nine-hour film Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks (2003) received the Grand Prix at the Marseille Festival of Documentary Film, his Fengming made an appearance in Cannes and Toronto in 2007, and another of his documentaries, Crude Oil (2008), premiered at the Rotterdam festival. His work is characterised by many-hour-long observations of everyday moments in a selected environment, from factories or mines to a mental asylum. He is among the authors included in the Complete Letters project presenting his filmmaking method also in his Master Class.
